Señales Selañes

This Punk Jazz ensemble – formed by Tijuana-based artists Ángel Peralta (electric piano), Esteban Marrón (electric bass), Carlos Emilio Montiel (drums), and Juan Reyes (tenor sax) –explores cultural resistance and the transgression of sonic norms through a musical language influenced by jazz, noise, garage punk, hip hop, and psychedelia. Maintaining a creative ethic that respects the true spirit of jazz through improvisation and protest, their music aims to highlight the timelessness of sonic experimentation while also expressing the intense energy of the reality of living in Mexico.

Charlie Chávez y su Afrotruko

One of the region’s most popular jazz artists, conguero, drummer, and percussionist Charlie Chávez leads this dynamic binational ensemble featuring vocalists Roberto Wence and Magui Morales and electric bassist Ignacio Arango from Cuba, plus piano, horns, and percussionists from San Diego, Tijuana, Puerto Rico, Panama, Venezuela, and Peru. The band’s name, “Afrotruko,” combines the rhythms of Africa (Afro) and the “magic trick” (truko) of improvisation. They specialize in the infectiously danceable sounds of 70s Salsa, Mambo, Boleros, and Chachachá, drawing inspiration from artists such as Ray Barreto, Ruben Blades, Willie Colon, Celia Cruz, and Tito Puente.
