THE FINAL NIGHT OF THE FIRST ANNUAL SAN DIEGO TIJUANA INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL.
Join us as we celebrate our region's binational jazz history; from Jelly Roll Morton's 1920s roots in Tijuana to the origin of rock icon Carlos Santana, and so much more.
This year’s program channels a cultural legacy reaching back 100 years by bringing together international, national, and regional artists to perform at three unique venues.
FEATURING THESE ACCLAIMED ARTISTS:

Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band
One of today’s most acclaimed jazz artists, Louisiana-based drummer Brian Blade brings his longtime ensemble, The Fellowship Band, to the SDTJ Festival for a rare local appearance. Formed in 1997, The Fellowship Band has been called, “one of the most distinctive bands in jazz in the 21st century.” From the beginning, they created a sound of its own genre, encompassing jazz, gospel, and folk music that continues to uplift and inspire listeners worldwide.” NPR called The Fellowship Band, “an all-star lineup that functions more like a harmonious congregation, ebbing and flowing as one.” The band features Jon Cowherd on piano, Christopher Thomas on bass, Myron Walden on bass clarinet and alto saxophone, and Melvin Butler on tenor and soprano saxophone.

Mingus Dynasty
One of the most eminent composers in jazz, bassist Charles Mingus was also an artist of the border region. Born in Nogales, Arizona, and raised in South Los Angeles, Mingus found inspiration in Mexico that led to his landmark 1957 album, “Tijuana Moods.” Since Mingus’s passing in 1979, bands dedicated to his music have performed weekly in NYC. The Festival presents the latest edition of the 7-piece Mingus Dynasty band, comprised of top NYC-based players Wayne Escoffery on tenor sax, Boris Kozlov on bass, Sara Hanahan on alto sax, Conrad Herwig on trombone, Alex Pope Norris on trumpet, Helen Sung on piano, and Donald Edwards on drums. Dynasty’s performance will feature pieces from “Tijuana Moods” and other classic Mingus repertoire.
